Joshua T. Chu
Understanding the nuances of the patent landscape, Joshua develops tailored strategies to help his clients achieve the broadest patent coverage.
Joshua Chu is a partner and co-practice group leader of the firm's Intellectual Property Practice Group. Clients turn to Joshua for prosecution of U.S. and international patent applications, as well as opinion work related to intellectual property strategy and consultation.
Joshua’s general engineering background gives him the versatility to learn many types of technologies quickly and to see the big picture when assisting clients. In addition, Joshua’s specific experience in biomedical, mechanical, electrical, software, and systems engineering offer a broad base from which to support clients and provide complex strategic considerations within and across different technological areas.
Joshua has particular technical proficiency in the fields of medical implants, devices, and treatments, including spinal, shoulder, and other orthopedic implants, cardiovascular implants and medical diagnostic tools, as well as electromechanical systems and electronic circuitry, video game software and peripherals, telecommunications, computers and networking, flat panel display technologies, and fuel cells. Joshua is also a member of the Firm’s industry team that focuses on the decommissioning, recycling, and repowering of renewable energy facilities that have reached the end of their useful life, and handles and coordinates the intellectual property considerations for the Firm in this developing field.
Personal Approach
Joshua believes that patent law should never be practiced with a “one-size-fits-all approach,” so he takes the extra time to understand his clients' needs and business goals before developing a patent strategy. This allows him to find the right solutions that align most closely with his clients’ objectives, while carefully navigating around the patent office’s restrictions.
A career in law was never the plan. Joshua went to graduate school for biomedical engineering but after completing a few internships, he realized it wasn’t the career he wanted. He took the LSAT on a whim, embarked on a career that would become his passion, and never looked back.
Joshua describes himself as a foodie but not one of the fussy ones. He enjoys a good meal and is willing to try anything. Traveling internationally is also a passion, but he is currently taking a break from long flights due to his young son (it might be a while…).
