Jan Steinhour practices in the area of employee benefits planning, ‎administration, and compliance. Her employee benefit plan experience includes ‎assistance to large and small governmental and private employers with ‎all types of pension and welfare benefit plan issues involving fiduciary ‎responsibility, plan administration, benefit claims, federal and state tax ‎and labor law consequences, and collective bargaining benefits issues.

Jan frequently assists clients with the design, ‎implementation, and maintenance of executive compensation ‎programs; golden parachute arrangements and other severance ‎programs; insured and self-insured health and other insured and self-‎insured welfare benefits, such as disability, dental, and vision benefits ‎and including retiree benefits; VEBAs; equity-based arrangements and plans; tax-qualified ‎retirement plans, including leveraged and un-leveraged ESOPs, 401(k), ‎‎403(b), and 457 plans, PERA, cash balance and traditional pension ‎plans; and cafeteria plans.

Jan helps clients ensure that they maximize their tax ‎benefits while complying with the unique and complex laws and regulations ‎surrounding benefit plan administration and operations. She has experience in ‎designing benefit plans that meet the legal requirements of ERISA, ‎COBRA, HIPAA, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Older Workers ‎Pension Benefit Protection Act, the ADEA, the Americans with ‎Disabilities Act, and Health Care Reform.‎

Jan frequently advises clients on alternative plan investments under ERISA, including application of the plan assets rules to institutional investments, as well as the prohibited transaction issues that accompany these investments. She also has extensive experience with ‎benefit claims risk management and administrative reviews and ‎fiduciary issues, as well as with IRS and Department of Labor audits of employee benefit plans and correction programs.

Personal Approach

Because no “one size fits all,” Jan draws on her comprehensive knowledge of related corporate, tax, employment, labor, insurance, and securities laws partnering with clients to design, implement, and administer employee benefits programs that meet their specific objectives and requirements. Jan worked for the IRS before joining the firm and has represented many clients before the IRS Department of Labor and Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation. As a result, she offers a multidisciplinary approach to find the best and most practical solutions for complex employee benefit issues. Her direct and optimistic personality is a refreshing combination with her excellent client service.

Jan is poodle passionate. She owns and shows poodles, including some from Japan, Sweden, and Finland.
