Denver: Navigating the 2017 Domain Namespace (Watch Out for Pirates!)
Nate Edwards, counsel in the firm’s Colorado Springs office, will present on domain name trademark enforcement strategies at the Association of Corporate Counsel’s Fall Frenzy event on Thursday, October 5 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Denver. As many may know, trademark enforcement in the domain namespace was complicated by introduction of approximately 500 new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) in the last few years. Prior to the new gTLDs, brand owners often confidently managed their brand in the fifteen or so “legacy” gTLDs, such as .com, .net, .biz, .info, et al. The new gTLD launches presented new challenges for brand owners, and many still haven’t adopted consistent policing or defensive registration policies and practices. The bad news for brand owners: more new gTLDs are on the way soon. With the benefit of reflection on successful and failed practices and strategies in the emerging domain namespace, Mr. Edwards will focus on cost-effective defensive domain name registration and policing/enforcement strategies that can work for brand owners in the new namespace.
Mr. Edwards serves as outside advisor on domain name matters for one of the world’s largest organizations. He has also represented clients in dozens of UDRP domain name dispute proceedings, and is a member of the Intellectual Property Constituency (IPC) to ICANN, the corporation responsible for operating the domain namespace.
