Peter Wand is a partner in Lewis Roca's Health Care, Tax, and Trusts and Estates practices and currently serves as the co-chair of the firm’s Tax practice.
In his health care practice, Peter represents providers, practice groups, hospitals, health care systems, and ancillary service providers. He regularly assists clients in negotiating and documenting physician recruitment arrangements, physician employment agreements, and a variety of hospital-practice group contracts, including service line / co-management agreements, call coverage agreements, medical director agreements, and professional service agreements. Peter also advises clients on a wide array of health care regulatory matters involving fraud and abuse, anti-kickback, physician ownership and referral, and HIPAA’s privacy and security rules. He has substantial experience advising health care clients with respect to the formation of multispecialty and single specialty physician groups, corporate finance and governance issues, and transactional matters, including mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures. Peter was recognized as a Rising Star in the 2012-2017 editions of Southwest Super Lawyers®.
Peter’s tax practice is focused on executive compensation and employee benefits matters. In this practice, Peter helps employers design and manage qualified and non-qualified retirement plans and executive compensation programs, including equity-based incentive compensation programs (i.e., stock options, stock appreciation rights, phantom stock ,and restricted stock) governed by Section 409A of the Internal Revenue Code. Peter regularly works with employers, auditors, actuaries, accountants, financial advisors, and other plan fiduciaries to ensure compliance with the Internal Revenue Code and the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA). He has considerable experience representing employers before the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Labor in connection with the correction of 401(k) plan errors governed by the Employee Plans Compliance Resolution System.
In his estate and tax planning practice, Peter helps his clients identify and implement their tax and estate planning goals, utilizing the instruments and techniques best suited to each client’s needs, including revocable and irrevocable trusts, wills, powers of attorney, donor advised funds, family limited partnerships, and private foundations. In his time at Lewis Roca, Peter has also developed substantial experience helping young professionals and new parents plan for the unexpected in a tax-efficient and uncomplicated manner. Peter also counsels clients on a variety of matters related to the taxation of distributions from qualified and non-qualified retirement plans. He has been recognized by AZ Business Magazine as a Top Lawyer in the category of Trusts and Estates.
Prior to joining Lewis Roca, Peter worked for United States Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona and United States Senator Dianne Feinstein of California. During his time in Washington, D.C., Peter also served as a legal extern to the United States Senate, Committee on the Judiciary’s Subcommittee on Terrorism, Technology, and Homeland Security.
Peter also serves on the Board of Directors of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and as a member of the Saint Mary’s Catholic High School Advisory Board.
